In January 2024, I asked the Whering team, fashion journalist Sophie Benson and sustainable fashion content creator, Sophie Cundall, what their sustainable fashion goals were for the new year.
Four months later, how are they holding up? We know how hard it can be to change ingrained habits, so I wanted to check in with them and see how they’ve been getting on.

Now I’m a bit further into my no-buy-year, I’ve really started to notice a better understanding of my personal style (beyond just copying people on Pinterest lol) and a disinterest in adding new pieces to what I have. I’ve kept a list of what I’ve enjoyed and not enjoyed wearing, and also had a chance to sell a tonne of clothes that I no longer wear. I’ve also found that I can still enjoy a thrift day with friends but just try pieces for inspiration, and enjoy the book section! Oh, and I did break it once- for a real coach bag for £18 in a charity shop. But instead of just shoving it in my wardrobe, I’ve worn it nearly every day since!

My pledge for 2024 was to only buy 6 new items in the whole year. So far, I’ve only bought two things: a pair of Ahluwalia jeans from Vinted that I've not taken off and some Tom Ford sunglasses that I will die in. The limit of 6 new items has encouraged me to only buy things I absolutely love that I am confident I’ll wear nonstop. Only having bought 2 new items 4 months into 2024 puts me in a good position to stick to my goal of only buying 6 items the entire year.

It’s crazy how easy it is to eliminate impulse shopping when you limit yourself to only buying items made up of good materials. On that note, I unintentionally did 2.5 months of no-buy. More recently, I went through my Whering Wishlist and had a look at some of the second-hand things I had saved over the last few months, which lead me to a few Depop purchases which all fit the criteria of what I’m setting out to do this year and compliment my wardrobe well. Knowing me, and knowing how picky I am with items now, it’ll probably be another few months of unintentional no-buy, so I’ll be aiming to really set aside some time to experiment with what’s already in my wardrobe and discover new outfit combos.
